These drawings were made in order to study the values (tints and shades) of the masters. Imagine 10 tones from mid-gray to white. These are the tints. And 10 from mid-gray to black; these are the shades. How many values did Rembrandt and Vermeer use? I didn’t count them because they’re uncountable. But certainly there were more than 20!
